This album is unified by a stimulus drawing on ideas of memory, time and feelings awoken by the simple act of remembering—inspired by a collaboration between performers and composer that began with the première in Germany in 2019, of the duo Memoria non est in mente (‘Memory is not in the mind’).
British composer David Lewiston Sharpe’s music includes commissions and performances from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal; the London Song Festival; Chichester Cathedral (UK); St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Valletta. The title work, Capriccio, is partly a response to Boccaccio’s Decameron—stories told against the backdrop of the plague in Italy during the Middle Ages—while the Cello Sonatina and the violin sonata Beautiful Are The Drinking Doves draw on the January feast of Epiphany and Roman mosaics in Malta.
